My Completed Sets

As I've stated, I am a set collector. As of the time of this writing, which is Thursday, January 29th, 2015, I have completed 144 sets. This covers multiple sports and non-sports, with the oldest set dating back to 1922, and the newest being from 2014. NASCAR leads the way with 64 completed sets, NBA has 59.

This only includes base sets, no parallels, inserts, or small team issues. To be included the cards must be pack based, or a factory set more than 100 cards, or issued singly. There are a couple of exceptions- they will be noted when they come up in the listing. The listings will be in chronological order of the set's issue, and if multiple sets from the same year, alphabetical order for that year. Each set name is clickable to see the checklist, and in most cases, scans, as posted to the Database. Many of which were posted by me, or soon will be. After the set name, will be the total number of cards in the base set, followed by the date I completed it, if known. I didn't always keep good records.

I generally do NOT count variations- if I have one example of each card, then I am happy. I will chase them from time to time, but for me, I don't need to have both an error and correction for a set to be complete, nor a planned variation like Press Pass used to make by photoshopping the backgrounds on some cards.

I will begin with NASCAR, since it has the most completed sets...

  5. 1991 Pro Set Petty Family 50. I believe this was the second NASCAR set I completed.
  6. 1991 Traks 200. I have the complete factory set version, which is glossy. The retail pack issued cards are not glossy and I do not have all of them. They scan just the same, for what it's worth.

  9. 1992 Maxx 300. 1993. This was the first NASCAR set I completed.
  10. 1991 (or 1992) Galfield Press Pioneers of Racing 110. The Database has these listed as 1991, while I always believed they were issued in 1992. Either way, it's a great set.

  12. 1992 Traks 200. All 1992 Traks cards are glossy.
  13. 1993 Finish Line 180, 9/13/2010. Despite the fact that 1993 was my first year watching NASCAR, this is the only set I've completed from the season.

Now I move onto the NBA. My NBA collection outweighs my NASCAR collection by about 3 to 1, but I have completed less sets. A large part of this is the fact that many NBA sets run for hundreds of more cards than NASCAR; NASCAR has only a handful of sets that clear 200 cards, where the majority of NBA sets fall in the 300s, with one going to 659 cards. NASCAR only has one set ever issued to have more than 300 cards. In later years many Press Pass sets didn't even clear 100 cards. Also, most NASCAR sets do not have serially numbered, autographed or relic short prints in the sets, which was something more than half of NBA sets have had since the late 1990s. That is actually probably a larger factor, to be honest. I also belong to an Excellent NASCAR card trading forum, and the majority of the sets completed since 2009 (when I joined) would not have been possible without that forum- several of the sets in fact, came to me entirely as gifts.
  1. 1971-72 Topps 233, 5/16/2004. I actually have both variations of the NBA checklist as well. First set to include ABA cards.
  2. 1975-76 Topps 330, 11/30/2002. The largest vintage NBA set (with the ABA included as well) and the first to include more action shots than posed shots.
  3. 1976-77 Topps 144, 4/18/2004. Postcard sized, this is one of my all time least favorite sets, mainly due to the fact that I can't store them with the rest of my collection.
  4. 1977-78 Topps 132, 5/16/2004. My set is a mix of brown and white cardstock. I have debated breaking them apart and hunting for the other version of each, which would remove it from this gallery, however, the cards were inserted into packs together, so I have not done it yet.

  6. 1981 TCMA 44, 4/18/2004. I debating including this one, as it is a factory set and under 100 cards, but they are so rare that completing the set is quite an accomplishment in and of itself, so they stay.
  7. 1981-82 Topps 198, 5/2/2004. The first vintage set I added to my collection, summer 1996.

  9. 1991-92 Upper Deck 500, 12/18/2014. This set was the first completed through Cardboard History.

  11. 1992-93 Upper Deck 510, 5/21/2014. Does not include #1a Trade card, but does include the redeemed card.

  14. 1994 Upper Deck USA 90. These could also be sorted with the Olympics, but I sort them here and count them as part of my NBA collection.

  18. 1995 Action Packed Hall of Fame 38. Does not include the two autographs, which in my opinion should be counted as part of the parallel set, and not the base set.
  19. 1995-96 Collector's Choice 410, 7/17/2002
  20. 1995-96 Fleer 350, 1/9/2003. The set I discovered the NBA with, in February 1996.
  21. 1995-96 Jam Session 125, 8/19/2004
  22. 1995-96 SPx 50, 10/18/1996. This IS a 1995-96 release, despite how Beckett, the Database and everywhere else lists it. It was the first NBA set I completed- my parents gave it to me for my birthday my first year collecting the sport. It's a moment I'll never forget.
  23. 1996 Slam Dunk Series 40. These were released with a chocolate bar in 4-card packs. I have a bunch still factory sealed (minus the chocolate, which I almost surely ate years ago)
  24. 1996-97 Bowman's Best 80/125, 3/19/2004. The base cards are only an 80 card set, but the Rookies and Retro are usually considered part of the base set, I have all three completed.
  25. 1996-97 Collector's Choice 400, 1997. I bought a factory set.
  26. 1996-97 Metal 250, 4/8/2014. One of the most important sets to me, which I will detail in it's own post someday.
  27. 1996-97 Topps 221, 12/14/2005. Purchased the factory set but it does not include the series 1 Checklist, which is a major short print.
  28. 1996-97 Topps Stars 150. This is a 1996-97 release, regardless of how it's listed.
  29. 1997 Upper Deck Nestle Crunch Time 40. The second of three sets produced in partnership between Upper Deck and Nestle. Packaged like 1996 Slam Dunk Series.
  30. 1997-98 Z-Force 210.
  31. 1998-99 Flair Showcase 90, 10/16/2003. Row 3 only.
  32. 1998-99 Metal Universe 125, 1/8/2003
  33. 1998-99 Thunder 127. Series 2 was cancelled by the lockout.
  34. 1998-99 Upper Deck Century Legends 89, 12/25/2002. This is listed incorrectly as a 1999 release.

  50. 2002-03 SP Authentic 203, 4/15/2004. This is probably one of my greatest achievements in the hobby. The set includes 31 autographs, and 72 serially numbered short prints, not counting the autographs, which are also numbered. I got lucky in that I pulled the Yao Ming autograph, which was the most expensive card in the set, had I not pulled it I would not have been able to afford it as a single.
  51. 2002-03 Topps 10 150, 1/9/2003. A concept that should have lasted more than one issue.
  52. 2002-03 Upper Deck 420, 12/25/2013
  53. 2003-04 Fleer Tradition 300, 12/25/2013
  54. 2003-04 Rookie Exclusives by Upper Deck 60, 2/27/2004. At 60 cards, this is the smallest set to be released in the traditional pack format.
  55. 2003-04 Topps 249, 8/13/2014
  56. 2003-04 Topps 1st Edition 249, 8/13/2014. Despite being listed as an insert/parallel to 2003-04 Topps on the Database, this was actually a standalone set. It was the normal Topps cards with a foil 1st Edition logo, and no inserts or parallels whatsoever.
  57. 2003-04 Topps Factory Set 265, 12/18/2003. The factory set had gold foil instead of silver, and many cards had different images, or something as small as the Topps logo on the card back being a different color, aside from the obvious 16 extra cards.
  58. 2005-06 Topps 255, November 2005. For many years I thought this would be the last NBA set I would complete. I've since come to my senses and returned to collecting and proved that wrong.
  59. 2013-14 Panini 200, 6/16/2014. My family gave me a box to celebrate 1 year of not dying, but despite getting 22 duplicates, I came up 4 cards short. I got them online later. 
I am not a big fan of college sports- I will care when you become a professional athlete.
As such, I've only completed 1 NCAA basketball set, although I am 1 card away on one set, and under 10 on 3 more sets.

Other sports/multi-sport sets- I don't generally collect other sports, however, I will never, ever turn down a free card. Any free card. As I type this (1/30/2015) I am only hours away from getting a complete hockey set as a gift from one of my best friends. I do collect Olympic cards and have completed 1 Olympic set as of this writing, however I'm close on a couple others.

Other forms of Auto Racing- technically, these should be included with the other sports, but I wanted to keep them separate, as they mean that much to me.
  1. 1990 Classic Monster Trucks 125, sometime in 1990. This was the very first set I ever completed. I became a Monster Truck fan in 1986, and while I no longer follow them, the late 80s and 90s trucks still hold a firm grasp on my memory. Also the first box I ever opened, and the first set I posted in it's entirety to the Database.
  2. 1991 All-World Indy 100, 1/10/2010
  3. 1991 Hot Stuff ARCA 68, 4/30/2009. Most people group these with NASCAR- but that's not actually correct. While the cars were interchangeable for most of the 1990s and up until 2007 (ARCA was a little looser with restrictions than NASCAR was) and some of the photos in this set even show the car in NASCAR trim, ARCA is it's own group and should be counted separately. Also, this set is under 100 cards, and sold only as a factory set, but with the fact that I also purchased a factory set of the 1992 issue and came up two cards short, they are counted.

Now, finally, we move to Non-Sports cards. I began as mostly a Non-Sports collector, although my first cards were actually from the 1988 Bigfoot set (Monster Trucks), Non-Sports was what I collected exclusively from 1988-1992. Then I discovered NASCAR...then in 1996 I discovered the NBA. Once that happened, I focused so much on the NBA that I pushed NASCAR aside and essentially totally dropped non-sports cards. It's something I now regret, but since I've rediscovered them, around 2010, I have actually been enjoying non-sports cards more than NASCAR, and about even with NBA if not even a little more. There is still so much I don't know, that it's always an adventure and I'm always finding something new exciting to add to my collection- even if it's just new to me. My oldest card is a non-sports issue, from 1909. The hobby began in 1879 with non-sports cards- they actually predate baseball, which most people don't know. I don't have a lot of Non-sports sets completed, as I can't chase cards as much as I used to due to having to spend more than $500 a month on the medicine that keeps me alive, it's no coincidence that the majority of my completed sets were completed more than a decade ago, and if I did not belong to an excellent NASCAR trading board I would not have anywhere near as many sets completed there, either.

  1. 1922 Lambert & Butler's Motor Cars 25, 9/28/2014. I am still in shock about getting this set. Until 2013 I thought getting any cards from the Cigarette era was just a dream...then I got 2 of them as singles...I never imagined I'd be able to get a complete set...for under $60, at that...and yet, I did!
  2. 1990 Impel Marvel Universe 162. I believe this was the second set I ever completed, likely in 1990 or 1991.
  3. 1991 Impel G.I. Joe 200, sometime in 1991. I was introduced to GI Joe in 1990, and I'm still a fan all these years later. I don't collect the action figures anymore, but I still read the comics, and if I could find some of the other cards I don't have, I'd add them to my collection in a heartbeat.

  5. 1991 Topps Desert Storm 264, 6/5/2014. Is there any set that epitomizes the early 1990s more than this one?

  12. 2004 Upper Deck History of the United States of America 300, 1/1/2011. I bought a factory set and took out one card each day until I got annoyed doing that and took out all the rest on the first of the year that year.
  13. 2007 Rittenhouse DC Legacy 50.
  14. 2007 Topps Star Wars 30th Anniversary 120, 12/25/2012. I love Star Wars. My earliest memory of anything is watching Star Wars, and for many years I believed that the duplicates my brother gave me from his Star Wars cards he got new in the 70s and 80s were my first cards (Until we talked about it and he remembered that he gave them to me only after I had the Bigfoot cards) but this is the only Star Wars set I've been able to complete...and I received the complete set as a Christmas present, no less.
And that's all of them. Or at least, I think it is! I could swear I have the 1990 Maxx set complete, but it's not on my official chart I made. I'll need to research it.

As I complete more sets, I will make not of it in the comments and slot them in where they belong, in chronological order of release.
